The Ocean View High School (OVHS) gymnasium will now officially be known as the Jim Harris Gymnasium in honor of the legendary, late basketball coach.  On November 26, hundreds of former players, current students, alumni, family, and friends gathered to help the school make the renaming official.

The ceremony followed the school’s 6th annual Coaches for a Cause games.  Each year, both the boys and girls basketball teams play in benefit of the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research.

Coach Harris, 67, was the first and only boys basketball coach in the school’s history, leading the Seahawks for 33 years until his passing on October 23, 2011.  Up until that point, he had been battling cancer for four months.  During his time at OVHS, Coach Harris became one of the most successful coaches in the state with 665 wins and two CIF Southern Section championships.  He was also inducted into both the CIF-SS and Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association (SCIBCA) hall of fame.

“(Coach Harris) had an amazing impact on the lives of countless basketball players at Ocean View, but it was the influence he had on the entire Ocean View community that made him so special,” said OVHS Athletic Director, Tim Walsh.  “Coach Harris took great pride in being a Seahawk.”
