Following a long weekend of fierce competition, Westminster High School (WHS) earned first place (Division 2) at the California Academic Decathlon competition in Sacramento, CA!

In addition to being crowned Division 2 state champions, the Lions received 14 individual medals including six gold, four silver, and four bronze in the categories of art, economics, essay, literature, mathematics, music, social science, and overall.  The team has also earned an overall state ranking of 14th.

Since June 2016, the decathletes have been hard at work studying the subjects of history, economics, music, literature, art, trigonometry, and more all pertaining to this year’s competition theme, World War II-era United States.

This marks the 11th consecutive year that Westminster High School has earned the opportunity to compete at the state competition.

The team is composed of three groups, based on unweighted academic GPAs.  They are as follows:

Honors (3.75-4.00)
Peter Dang (12), Nina Ho (11), Robin Nguyen (11)

Scholastic (3.00-3.74)
Jennifer Le (12), Jeffrey Sau (11)

Varsity (0.00-2.99)
Javier Cruz (12), Donna Ho (12), Christin Le (12)

In addition to the decathletes, the team also consists of a long list of coaches including Diana Anderson (Art), Pat Angus (Literature), Eric Brothwell (Science & SuperQuiz), Cindy Donovan (Mathematics), Sue Harmon (Economics), Elaine Lanz (Speech & Essay), Chris Morton (Economics), Steve Newton (Social Science), Teresa Strombotne (Art), and Kim-Long Vo (Music).

Coach Eric Brothwell expressed how thankful the team is for the unwavering support it receives from the Westminster High School community.  He noted in an email to the school, “We thank you for your constant and continued support, because it’s a Pride thing.”
