On December 7, Westminster High School (WHS) hosted the 2nd Annual Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament. Sponsored by the Special Olympics Orange County, the district-wide Unified Sports program aims to promote social inclusion by uniting adapted physical education athletes (students with intellectual disabilities) and partners (students without intellectual disabilities) through sports. Students are paired together to train and compete as teammates.
The participating high school teams, complete with their own moniker, included Edison (Thunder), Fountain Valley (Baron Ballers), Ocean View (Seahawks) and Westminster (Den Defenders and Roaring Red).
After a morning full of hard-fought competition, the Baron Ballers took home the championship title.
The district-wide Unified Sports program was coordinated by WHS adaptive physical education teacher, Sue Williams. A rewarding experience for all, the program gives special needs students a chance to wear a uniform, compete for their school and learn teamwork. In addition, student partners are able to connect with students they may have never interacted with before.
