Congratulations to Marina High School teacher, Doug Brown, for being selected as the 2018 Huntington Beach Union High School District Rookie of the Year!
A tradition since the 1970s, the Rookie of the Year award is given to a new teacher who shows promise, dedication and goes the extra mile for students.
Brown, an English language arts teacher, received an eventful surprise this morning during his class. Complete with balloons, Superintendent Clint Harwick led the way into Brown’s classroom as cabinet members, Marina administrators and fellow staff members followed closely with cheers, donuts, and a congratulatory banner.
“There’s nothing better than my students,” Brown said after the announcement. “They are the ones that give me the energy to do what I do and keep me excited to try different things.”
Jessie Marion, principal of Marina, said Brown was outstanding from the beginning as a new teacher and really impressed the administrators.
“He is a high-level teacher with high standards for his students,” Marion said. “He is engaging, enthusiastic and has really become a part of our culture at Marina.”
Brown said he hopes that his students remember what they learned about themselves in his class.
“If it’s something that changed their perspective, I hope they remember that it started before they left out into the world—and it’s an extra bonus if it was my class.”
