Following a long weekend of fierce competition, Westminster High School (WHS) earned first place (Division 2) at the California Academic Decathlon competition in Sacramento, CA! In addition to being crowned Division 2 state champions, the Lions received 14 individual medals including six gold, four silver, and four bronze in the categories of art, economics, essay, literature, mathematics, music, social science, and overall.  The team has also earned an overall state ranking of 14th. Westminster High School (WHS) has been selected as a National Demonstration School by AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other postsecondary options. With this new recognition, Westminster High School joins approximately 150 other AVID National Demonstration Schools and was selected through an application process, screening, and review, which included a site visit. AVID is implemented in over 5,600 schools across the nation, meaning that less than 3% of AVID schools earn the distinction of AVID National Demonstration School. For the second year in a row, Westminster High School’s (WHS) Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter has been selected to represent the Southern Region as a finalist in the California Association FFA Web Page Award Program.
