The Huntington Beach Union High School District (HBUHSD) has been named to the 2015 College Board’s 6th Annual AP District Honor Roll for the second time in the last three years – previously in 2013. In doing so, this makes the District one of only two school districts in Orange County and one of only 29 school districts in the state of California to receive this matching distinction.

According to the College Board, just 425 school districts in the United States and Canada were named to this same honor roll for the 2015 year with less than seven percent of those schools from California.

This recognition comes as a direct result of increased participation and access to Advanced Placement (AP) course work while additionally increasing or maintaining the percentage of students scoring a 3 or higher on AP Exams.

“We are very honored to receive this award for the second time, as it is continued evidence of the outstanding work that is being done district-wide to support all students in taking our most rigorous course of study,” Owen Crosby, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services said.

Since 2013, the District increased its participation/access to AP Exams by 22%, surpassing the required 4% growth substantially. In addition to the previously stated increase, the District was also able to overall boost the performance level of its students who scored a 3 or higher by 22.1%.

Set forth by the College Board, inclusion on the 6th Annual AP District Honor Roll is based on the examination of three years of AP data from 2013 to 2015 using the following criteria:

— Increased participation/access to AP by at least 4 percent in large districts, at least 6 percent in medium districts, and at least 11 percent in small districts;

— Increased or maintained the percentage of exams taken by African American, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian/Alaska Native students, and;

— Improved or maintained performance levels when comparing the percentage of students in 2015 scoring a three or higher to those in 2013, unless the district has already attained a performance level at which more than 70 percent of its AP students are scoring a three or higher.

The Huntington Beach Union High School District is honored to receive this recognition as it reflects the continued district-wide mission of college and career readiness in students.
