Three-sport athlete, Micayla Shook, has been named the MaxPreps National Athlete of the Month for September.
On Thursday, September 28, Shook’s achievements in cross country, soccer and track were recognized by MaxPreps in front of hundreds of classmates, friends, family, coaches and school administrators.
“The biggest honor for me is being able to represent my school on a positive level,” Shook stated.
The senior is currently finishing her high school career before she heads off to college next fall to focus on a cross country, track and academic career. She currently carries a 4.8 grade point average and serves on the Student Senate, National Honor Society, Social Society, Huntington Beach Youth Board, Ocean View Athletic Leadership Council and student government.
In preparation for her senior season, Shook worked out everyday since June, running an average of 40 miles per week. Last season, she ran a personal best of 19:45 and is hoping to accomplish another personal best of 19:00 this season.
“She is such a hard worker and role model for the team. She always strives for the best and sincerely wants her entire team to shine,” said track coach Hugo Avina who also nominated Shook.
The 20-minute ceremony featured presentations by two track and field athletes, Kyle Clemons, 2016 Olympic gold medalist, and Christina Manning, 2017 World Championship finalist.
