HBUHSD reduces community’s tax bill by millions

The Huntington Beach Union High School District is proud to announce its most recent initiative to benefit its students and community members. Under the leadership and direction of the Board of Trustees, Superintendent Dr. Greg Plutko chose to take advantage of historically low interest rates to refinance the district’s Election of 2004 Bonds without extending their life. The district was able to reduce the interest rates on the prior bonds from 5.00% to 2.95%, reducing the community’s tax bill by over $4.115 million. Local high schools grant wishes

On Nov. 11, the OC Register released an article highlighting the Marina High School’s Make-A-Wish Club and their recent fundraising event. Along with Los Alamitos High School’s Make-A-Wish Club, the school’s participated in the Macy’s Believe Campaign at their Nov. 6 football game. “From Nov. 6 to Dec. 24, “Believers” of all ages are encouraged to bring stamped letters to Santa to Macy’s store or send a letter to macys.com/believe. For each letter, Macy’s donates $1 to Make-A-Wish to fulfill requests.” The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. WHS Lions participate in traditions of Día de los Muertos

On Monday, Nov. 2, Westminster High School observed Día de los Muertos for the second year in a row. Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, honors the deceased with lively celebrations complete with food, drink, parties and traditional activities. To prepare for the lunchtime festivities, Westminster students, staff and administrators worked long hours in order to transform a section of the campus with altars, or ofrendas, in remembrance of the deceased. Marina High School student leaders recognized

On Wednesday, Oct. 28, students at Marina High School were recognized by the school for their outstanding leadership talents. The students in the large group were all nominated by their teachers to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar. “I’ve Got Your Back” at Fountain Valley High School

On Oct. 26, Fountain Valley High School hosted the “I’ve Got Your Back” assembly, an anti-bullying program for the school’s freshman class.  Prior to this gathering, a diverse group of 25 students were selected from differing campus social groups to be “Ambassadors of Change” for the program. Additionally, a small number of staff members were included to advise these students throughout this educational journey.
